Im about to head to Walmart for my weekly grocery shopping. Gotta get there early before all the good stuff gets grabbed.
Im really not a big fan of Walmart but now that I live just from a few miles from a Super Walmart – I thought I’d check it out and what they had that might be healthy. And boy was I surprised.
So here’s my “Kevin Approved” Healthy Walmart Grocery List: I’ll list the items in the order that I purchase them in the store – to make your life easier – most Walmarts are organized in similar ways.
Grocery List:
Fruit/Veggie Aisle:
1-2 Bags of Spinach – I like to lay down a layer of spinach leaves in a bowl and then put my heated frozen meals on top for extra veggies
Bread/Bakery Section:
Dave’s Killer Bread – Power Seed – its absolutely delicious and has 4-5 grams of protein per slice – and they have a great lo calorie version as well.
Frozen Food Aisle:
Healthy Choice Power Bowls (l love all the flavors but Korean Beef is my favorite – but be careful its pretty spicy) only 300 calories – 20 grams of protein & 500 mg of sodium which is really low for a frozen entree
Tastefully Plated Paleo Frozen Meals – Pork is my favorite but they’re delicious – my favorite frozen entree – 300-350 calories – gluten & grain free, 500 mg of sodium, 20-30 grams of protein – very tasty.
Bag of Frozen Berry Medley – berries have way less sugar than all other fruits with the most amount of fiber – its a win-win.
Snack Aisle:
Crazy Richards Peanut Butter – I love crunchy!!
Gold Valley Organic Beef Jerky – Plain – only 270mg of sodium with 11 grams of protein, 5 grams of sugar and 70 calories – WOOHOO
Nature Valley Protein Bars – Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter is my favorite – super cheap with great nutritional stats 190 cals – 6 grams of sugar – 10 grams of protein & 5 grams of fiber – I love em. I also get some other of my more expensive protein bars in the pharmacy section – see below
Raw Unsalted Nuts – be careful most of the nuts at Walmart are salted & roasted which kills alot of the healthy fats in nuts – so search wisely – I will usually find Blue Diamond Whole Natural Almonds and I get Lightly Salted Wonderful Pistachios in the shells to slow me down eating them.
Cereal Aisle:
Kashi Go Lean – Plain – dont get the flavored kind – too much sugar
Steel Cut Oatmeal – doesnt matter the brand – just make sure its steel cut oatmeal not instant or rolled oats
Yogurt/Milk Section:
Fage 1% or 2% Fat Greek Yogurt – Plain – I get the big size so I can simply add some of my frozen berries
Eggs – free range chicken – EggLands Best – is my favorite – best taste
Unsweetened Almond or Soy Milk – Plain – reminder almond milk only has about 2 grams of protein and soy milk has about 8-10 grams of protein per 8 oz cup. Make sure to get unsweetened versions so you can save about 6-8 grams of sugar.
Pharmacy Section:
Protein Bars – get a 4 pack box of Oatmega & Quest Protein Bars – lo sugar – high protein and good fiber – and they’re quite tasty too.
Protein Powder – Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey – dont get any of the other crappy protein powders they sell – they’re junk.
Coconut Oil – Carrington Farms – coconut oil I eat 1 tbsp every morning for all the healthy fats and medium chain triglycerides – great at helping you burn fat.
There you have it – my total bill is about $70-$80 depending on how many frozen entrees I load up on. I usually get about 6-7 per week because Im no cook.
